Allen Donnelly

Artist, Author, Whimsy Merchant

This is the official website of the artist and science-fiction/fantasy novelist, Allen Donnelly.

This is a poem I wrote after Richard Hammond (he of Top Gear fame) had his massive 200+ mph crash.
It was an attempt to express the human need to push things further and further, even if it's just driving faster than you should along a country road (not that I condone such a thing, obviously!).

Chasing the Horizon

Chase the fleeing horizon,
Race the lengthening shadows of night.
The flickering clock ticks away the miles,
Time and distance become one.

The past lies behind you,
Lost and forgotten in the dust.
Only the future matters now,
A vanishing point, speeding down the road.

Shift into top gear and open life’s throttle wide,
The universe blurs around you.
Go faster and faster and faster still.
Reach out and touch infinity.

The redline beckons.
Fire and air combine in furious synchronicity.
Rage against the laws of physics,
And hurl yourself at the world.

Dance along the edge of the catastrophe curve.
Roar your challenge into the abyss
And trip the light fantastic on the brink of oblivion.
This is how it feels to be alive!

Together we’ll race the setting sun.
We’ll leave reality behind.
And out beyond the edge of night,
That horizon can be ours.
